Trucks queue at Main Junction - Moshi

Dear Ankal,
Attached are photos of the rather long queue at the weighing bridge of Njia Panda in Moshi. It is indeed amazing that this one weighing station caters for all buses and trucks coming and going through to all parts of the country including that of Mombasa. These queues also cause congestion for other saloon cars traveling along that junction.

There tends to be rather frustrating delays apart from losses due to delays as at times there are more than 50-70 trucks and buses waiting to be weighed and one tends to simply wonder why can't Tanroads erect another station?

Turkish, Emirates airlines to start direct flights to KIA

From http://www.ippmedia.com/frontend/index.php?l=44080

Natural Resources and Tourism minister Hamis Kagasheki (L) is all smiles as he disembarks at KIA from Qatar Airways Airbus A320 that launched its Doha-Kilimanjaro maiden flight yesterday. Shaking hands with Kilimanjaro

Two more other international Airliners that include Turkish Airlines and Emirates Air plan to launch direct flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) following the rehabilitation of the airport spearheaded by the Kilimanjaro Airport Development Company (KADCO), the Natural Resources and Tourism Minister Khamis Kagasheki has said.

KADCO, the company that manages operations of the KIA has already secured a USD30m from a Netherlands-based firm, Orion Grand Facility in a bid to transform KIA into a fully-fledged tourist’s gateway.

Speaking at the maiden launch of Qatar Airways Doha –Kilimanjaro route at KIA yesterday, Kagasheki said KIA will now be able to get connections from the rest of the world which will help increase tourist inflow into the country as well as increasing the country’s revenue earnings.
“We have unique tourist sites that can attract more visitors in to the country. We need to embark on an aggressive marketing campaign that will help lure more tourists into the country.

“The good news is that we have respectable airline companies flying directly into the country that will help connect us to the rest of the world,” he said.

Earlier, the Transport Minister, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe speaking on Qatar Airways flight to Kilimanjaro said the airline’s decision to vie the Doha-Kilimanjaro route will be of great significance to the country.
The KADCO Board Chairman Ambassador Hassan Gumbo Kibelloh however said the company will provide a five-star handling company to all the companies interested in using the airport.
“Airlines interested in flying to KIA should be rest assured that they will get five-star handling services to match their status. Our vision is not only to make KIA a competitive airport but also dedicated to environmental conservation,” he said.

The Qatar Airways Chief Commercial Officer Marwan Koleilat during the occasion said the company’s launch of the Doha-Kilimanjaro route is commitment to providing world-class services adding that Kilimanjaro will now be connected to a variety of destinations across the country.

Qatar Airways joins other major airlines such as KLM, Edelweiss air, Condor air and Ethiopian Airlines to fly to the northern located international airport.

Arusha Town. Deadline set for town roads facelift

By Happy Lazaro and Staff Reporter
http://www.arushatimes.co.tz      Arusha’s town roads spotting telltale potholes for the past three decades will by the end of January next year be paved and smooth to drive on save for the menace of hawkers.

Twenty seven roads, some of which only about 0.2 kilometres long are currently being rehabilitated, thanks to a fund from the World Bank.

Rehabilitation of the roads which started mid last year has gained pace after the intervention of regional authorities last month who were disturbed by the slow implementation of the long overdue road reconstruction project.

Arusha’s District Commissioner John Mongella said at the end of last week that he was now satisfied with the speed the construction work is being undertaken by the Chinese Construction Company.

Limited to Themi and Njiro areas.

Last month regional and district authorities held a meeting with the roads contractor and consultants during which they brainstormed on the challenges being faced in rehabilitating the awfully dilapidated roads. After the meeting the contractors went back to work with vigour and there are now indications that the roads works would be completed by January next year.

Residents and owners of businesses along the roads which are being reconstructed had aired their complaints on the sluggishness of the contractors saying that they were inconsiderate to the people in the area.

A visit by reporters of this newspaper to roads under construction in Kaloleni saw sewage overflowing in streets after damage caused by heavy equipment being used by the contractors on the dilapidated sewage sysyem . People walking along the streets were actually forced to wade in the stinking human effluent.

The Regional and District inspection team last week visited the Afrika ya Mashariki road being rehabilitated by a local company. Works are now at an advanced stage and the road will soon be handed over to the clients. The team also visited construction site of a bridge across Themi River that will link Unga Limited and Themi areas. The road has now been christened Colonel Ndomba road.

The District Commissioner directed Colonel Ndomba road construction consultant Yohakim Mbwale to liaise with TANESCO to ensure that power lines along the road are removed immediately to allow construction of the vital road. The urban roads are being constructed by a Chinese Company by the name of CRGG China Services who have often complained about TANESCO for causing construction work delay by not relocating power poles in time.

But many people still believe that the roads will remain impassable after rehabilitation as the city authorities have to a large extent “allowed” hawkers to peddle their wares even on the middle of some of the urban roads especially around the Central market.

Watendaji wadaiwa kukwamisha ufugaji nyuki

Thursday, July 12, 2012
Rehema Matowo,Same
